For our first issue I decided to write about a topic that is very close to my heart.
Victims’ Rights in Focus – Empowering Victims in Qld
On 2 September 2023, the Queensland State Government announced the implementation of the interim Victims’ Commissioner. Why is this topic so important to me, you may wonder? The answer lies in my profound belief that justice should not be an abstract concept but a living reality for every individual of our community.
Back in 2014, I began advocating for a Commissioner for Victims’ Rights and I continued these efforts until 2019. Then, in 2022, following the Sofronoff Inquiry into the Queensland Forensic Lab, I renewed my commitment to this cause foreshadowing the many thousands of victims impacted by what was exposed to be the fundamental failings of the forensic lab analysing DNA exhibits.
This proposal sought to address the needs of victims of crimes by providing them with fundamental advocacy and support service coordination, ensuring they receive their rights as enshrined by the law.
